Alexandria Fletcher Chats About Being a Woman in Construction 

As the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) states, women currently “make up 9.9 per cent of the construction industry in the United States.” NAWIC also cites a smaller gender pay gap in construction, with women earning 95.5% of men’s wages, compared to the 82.9% national average.

We hope this is a sign that women’s representation will continue increasing in the construction industry!

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the dedicated women on the Nichols Contracting team. We sat down with one of them, Alexandria Fletcher, Florida Project Coordinator, to chat about her experience working in the construction industry. 

Meet Alexandria Fletcher, Florida Project Coordinator

Alexandria is responsible for processing permitting packages and supporting documents for Nichols Contracting Inc. and Nichols Life Safety throughout Florida.

Since joining the team in September 2022, she says her proudest achievement is the promotion that made her Florida’s Project Coordinator.

Alexandria is also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in project management to advance her career. That means she leads a busy life, but she’s dedicated to making it sustainable. 

“I balance my work and personal life by setting manageable goals each day,” she said. “Being able to meet priorities helps me feel a sense of accomplishment and control.”

Alexandria is also an advocate for women’s representation in the construction industry. “Women are taking on more leadership roles and breaking through barriers that once kept them out of the industry,” she said. “Having more women represented in the construction industry will encourage young girls that they can do it too.” 

When asked what advice she would give those young girls and women, she said developing confidence and doing what you can to break free from stereotypes is critical. 

“Let opportunity in, build trust, ask questions, and set boundaries,” she said. “Empowered women empower women!”
