Nichols Contracting was formed in 1991 to perform general construction work for local, state, and federal governments with the simple promise to do what we say we are going to do.

The Nichols Building, Sandy Spring, MD Located in historic Sandy Spring, MD, Nichols Contracting enjoys being an active supporter of our wonderful community, and the convenient access to the territories we serve – Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Our team is honest, dynamic, and devoted to exceeding our client’s expectations.

Fred Nichols started his construction career in the field as a carpenter and worked his way up to Vice President of his former company. His success and entrepreneurial spirit compelled him to create Nichols Contracting with the intent to perform general construction work for local and federal governments, a sector of the industry he became very familiar with during his time in the field.

The adoption of ADA laws and regulation in the early 1980’s led Fred to opportunities to resolve accessibility deficiencies in buildings. He learned the codes and requirements and built his business around life safety improvements for existing buildings. The most significant portion of this business has been and continues to be providing turnkey upgrades for elevator modernizations. Nichols Contracting is an industry leader in this field and consistently strives to provide better service for our cherished clients.


The life safety and elevator work touches almost every trade and building system which required the Nichols Contracting field personnel to be trained in various trades and become proficient in many skills. Because of this, we are capable of self performing concrete, masonry, structural steel, stainless steel cladding, framing, drywall, firestopping, flooring, painting, wallpaper, and more.

As our business and qualifications grew, so did the range and size of our projects. We recognized that the dexterity of our field personnel allowed us to pursue larger projects by partnering with our subcontractors and self performing supporting work as needed. This strategy required more management and allowed us to assemble an experienced team both from within and hired from other industry leaders. They own as diverse a skill set as our field personnel, and can provide all services from complete design build, to adhering to the detailed quality control requirements of government contracts.

Our goal for the future is to continue the growth of our business while improving the quality of our service. We are focused on providing the industry-best service for our core elevator business and strengthening the cherished relationships that are vital to our success. The new construction, tenant improvement and renovation work is our target sectors for growth, and we are actively seeking to expand our government client base. We are committed to be on the leading edge of technology to increase operational efficiency and the distribution of information. We are constantly pursuing credible subcontractors and talented like-minded professionals to augment our team. All of this, combined with continued hard work, will come continued success.
